Mending Wall

Mending Wall Wines

The name Mending Wall comes from the Robert Frost poem about two neighbors who meet once a year to restore the boundary that separates them, the boundary that brings them together.

Our winemaking philosophy follows a similar path. Mending Wall is about coming together to explore and question the established boundaries in winemaking. Here, we’re free to experiment and play. No longer constrained by space, time or rules about what should and what should not go into a bottle.

2015 Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Tournahu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Located just off Hwy 29, north of the town of St. Helena, lies the Tournahu Vineyard. Rocky with exceptional drainage, wines from this vineyard tend toward a mix of powerful fruit and bright acidity. Velvet-like in texture, the wine covers the entire palate in a silky mix of red & black fruit. With additional time in the glass, a creosote-like minerality appears in the mid palate as a harbinger of things to come. A thrilling wine to drink now, those with patience will be rewarded as additional layers of complexity emerge 4-5 years post vintage. A wine & vineyard worthy of our first single vineyard designate.

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

With this vintage we aimed for a wine that showed power, depth, grace and accessibility. In the glass, the wine displays a dark sanguine core with a ruby rim.  The aromatic notes play lightly in the glass emanating notes of spiced plum, eucalyptus, crushed blueberries, and cocoa powder.  The palate experience is where this wine really shines.  Notes of kirsch liqueur, clove, cedar, fresh leather, and currant all exist harmoniously making a profile that is fruit focused with a complimentary spicy earth component.  This wine is easy to enjoy today and will benefit from a few years in the cellar, ready for a special occasion in the future.

2014 Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah

Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah 2014

Petite Sirah is first and foremost about tannin. It’s ever present but the quality of it is really what unlocks the enjoyment of the wine. We feel this Palisades site in Calistoga is one of the best PS vineyards in California. This wine possesses a glass-coating deep purple hue that you would be hard pressed to even shine a light through. The real excitement starts with the aromas, however. Spearmint, tobacco leaf, black currant, anise, sandalwood and mashed apricots emerge in concert so layered that even the slightest shift of your nose brings new notes to the forefront. The palate is very balanced with notes of flint, blackberries, black tea, beef blood, coupled with lighter notes of violets, lavender oil and orange zest. The finish on this wine is extremely drawn out leaving you with plenty of opportunity to revel in the dark complexity that lingers for close to a minute.

Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah 2015

What can one say about this wine that hasn’t already been said? The Palisades Vineyard is truly one of the finest sites in all of California for Petite Sirah and in vintage 2015 the resulting wine is truly exceptional. Like the previous iterations, the wine pours dark as night into the glass however this book is not to be judged by its cover. Aromatically it shows white flowers and blackberries, while the first taste will reveal a savory, well balanced attack of red fruit, spice and hints of game. Drink now with food or age it out 20 years, it will be hard to miss the window on this one.

2014 Mortar & Stone

Mortar & Stone 2014

The name for this wine suggests a bonding process, a coming-together of two separate elements that combine to create a unified structural whole.

This wine displays an opaque deep purple hue with a dark garnet edge in the glass. Swirling aromas of pine sap, cinnamon stick, pencil lead, and warm blueberry compote emanate from the glass in deep layers. The palate experience, while deep and intricate is also decidedly bright and energetic for a wine that comes from such challenging growing conditions. Bringing together mountain and valley floor fruit, round lushness and angular architectural definition, this wine displays how different parts of the Napa Valley can contribute complimentary components that form a complete wine of intrigue, power, and depth.

2015 Stone on Stone

Stone on Stone 2015

The wine has a pure halcyon hue that has a regal feel to it, much like the rays of late afternoon sun caught in a bottle. The delicate aromas swirl around in the glass expressing notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, lime pith, and mango. The palate experience has a very sleek, viscous feel that all the while is framed by a nicely integrated acid framework. Notes of preserved lemon, flint, lychee, and lanolin seamlessly interact with a consistent trajectory from front to back with a finish that closes just at the right moment, to leave you wanting a little more.
